  1. The Crosscut Sawyer, Companion Video (43 mins) The Crosscut Sawyer - Crosscut saws are experiencing a revival not only in designated wilderness areas but in other backcountry settings. These traditional tools offer a safe and effective way to fell trees and buck logs when they are properly used and maintained. The 43-minute "Crosscut Sawyer" DVD shows experienced sawyers sizing up trees, evaluating situations, making safe sawing decisions, and pointing out common mistakes that occur during sawing operations. This DVD is a companion to the Forest Service "Chain Saw and Crosscut Saw Training Course." For Forest Service saw certification, field testing is also required.

  7. Disston Raker Gauge This old crosscut saw raker gauge was in pretty good shape when I got it. Cleaning it up really boiled down to a bath overnight in Evaporust, followed by some cautious cleanup at the wire wheel. The original paint was very solid, so I saw no point in removing it to put new on.

Derusting Old Saws

  1. Antique Rusty Saw Restoration | With Epoxy Handle Repair In this video i'm restoring an antique rusty hand saw.
I found this rusted hand saw at flea market store near me. It cost me 2 euro, i can say to expensive for the condition...but i took it to make a cool video restoration for you and to shaw that it is possible to restore such a rusted object.
The handle was so damaged so i decided to restore it with epoxy resin. Maybe was much more simple to make a new one...What i liked the most on this saw was the 6 brass screws in combination with wood and epoxy resin. This project took me almost
4 days to complet but was realy fun.
I hope you like it! Thank You for watching.

  2. 100 Year Old Crosscut Saw Restoration In this video I restore a one man crosscut saw which is likely 100 years old. I'm not sure who made the saw. There was no medallion in the handle ( or even a place for one)to identify the maker. Despite rust pitting, the saw is now in great working condition and will accompany me on many adventures in the future.
If you want to know how to work on crosscut saws or anything else about them I suggest you start with the USFS Crosscut Saw Manual.

  4. Two man saw restoration with white vinegar A short video of restoring an old two man pull-saw I found lying in the attic.
I started by taking measures of the saw and making a small wooden frame slightly bigger than saw itself. On top of it I stapled a plastic cover.
I bought 9 liters of 9% white vinegar and poured half of it on top of the saw which I previously roughly cleaned with scotch brite. After 24 hours I removed the saw from the bath , cleaned it as much as possible with ordinary cloth and repeated the bath once again. After second bath, black residue is removed with progressively finer sandpaper on different tools. Teeth are sharpened with dremmel tool with small disk grinder attachment.
Handles are made from leftover larch wood. I rounded the sharp edges with router and removed leftover paint with handheld belt sander. Handles are then attached to the saw using an ordinary wooden wedge.
    Thank you for watching!

  5. Antique Rusted Crosscut Saw Restoration I found this Saw in old garden during gathering firewood and took it home to restore, also it's known as Thwart Saw. The uniqueness of this restoration is that I restored steel part without sand paper, and used only my hands. I did my best to restore this beautiful Saw and make it perfect.
All the Restoration process is below:
This antique 2 man Crosscut Saw designed for cutting wood perpendicular to (across) the wood grain. They may be small or large, for fine work like woodworking or log bucking. At first Blade need to be sanded, it was very hard since to remove rust I used Pit sand. Grinding of metal lasted all day, that's the hardest sanding and rust removal ever done by me. It is made of spring steel and is very flexible.
Here is one tricky moment, to make it able to cut wood need to make saw tooth set with special pliers, this is necessary to avoid getting stuck in the wood during work, Rip and crosscut teeth are perfect at 60 degree angles. Also it was Sharpened with triangle file.
Beech wood is very good and durable and it is nice choice for Handle. I make it out of round blank, by using my angle grinder and Firm Lathe. Also it was soaked in Linseed oil polished and made a burned wood finish to reveal the texture.
Cautions: Always wear a hand protection while working with sharp tools. Always wear eye protection when working with grinders. Stay Focused.
    Almost Perfect Restoration
